Duggan the Space-Rhino...

"Handbrake is Unnecessary!"

Well, just want to express my general admiration for the first two-parter in the new series of SJA. Some thoughts follow:

First of all, I love the Judoon in this. I don't know, they seemed kind of bland in their first appearance in Smith and Jones (although it is some time since I last saw that one), but here they were great, precisely because they were kind of played for laughs. Loved Captain Tybo's combination of Duggan-esque unstinting violence combined with idiotic law-abidance; best bits being the pay-and-display and when he put the fear of God into those two "bizzies"; "Requisition slip!" Only topped by the bit when his Judoon buddies showed up to break him out of the lab in which he had been confined, but were a bit reluctant to do so due to the "Authorised Personnel Only" sign. Their non-subtitled conversation in Judoon-ese ("Jo-cho-smo-go-ko-yo-mo-bo-no!") was kind of hilarious.

Clyde continues to be The Man; easily the most admirable thing about SJA; I hope he had a long and successful acting career ahead of him. Although, having said that...

Luke was pretty decent in this, especially when he talked down the self-destruction-bent Mr Smith. However...

The horticultural misadventures of Rani's mum and dad were some sort of highlight; their encounters with the Judoon especially, but even more especially that bit where he tries ineptly to pick the lock...and she hands him the keys! ;D

And finally, I have to add; Possessed!Sarah Jane was kind of creepy and disturbing  while being a little bit awesome at the same time. I mean, watching Lis Sladen acting all evil and, well, kind of sleazy is a bit like watching your own mum doing the same. Brrrr.... Especially the bit where she's talking to Mr Smith. I  mean, that stuff's wrong - just wrong, I tell you! At other times, she came across like the kid in The Exorcist, and that's wrong too, in a different way. Especially liked the bit where she's arguing with her own reflection, Gollum-style!

And did anyone else notice the Bad Wolf-esque "Dreamland" reference? When does that air, by the way? I just the other day discovered that Clarke Peters is in it, and if that means nothing to you, you've never seen how cool he is in _The Wire_...

The tongue...yes, possessed-Sarah continues to haunt me... ;D But yes, she was very obviously having a great time doing it!

You hit the nail right on the head there - Rani's in it so that her awesome mum and dad can be in it too, obviously! I mean, she's all right, I guess, but Maria (and her amusing mum too) is sorely missed.

Heheh - didn't actually notice the mask bits, but now I'm going to have to watch it again and see if I can spot them! I noticed all of the other Judoon kept their helmets on, Sontaran-style, presumably because those masks are more expensive.

The next episode looks interesting, with a bit of timey-wimeyness going on; look forward to it. And you're right, maybe it is NuWho-deprivation or something, but SJA is really hard not to like, isn't it?

And yeah, can't wait for Dreamland - it's scientifically impossible to have too many Doctor Who cartoons.
