I don't know, I find myself wanting to say (or type) a few words, just to mark the ending of what was, for me, one of the genuine pleasures in television over the past few years. Yes, I'm referring to the Sarah Jane Adventures, which as you probably know, came to an end yesterday, almost certainly, like its star, before its time.

That was pretty much my reaction on finding out that Lis Sladen, great Who personality and great Liverpudlian, had passed away, a good deal later than most of the rest of you. I somehow managed to avoid seeing any news, certainly any Who news, last night and this morning, so it  was lunchtime today when I found out. It took me about ten minutes to realise it was true, because, well, unexpected. Nicholas Courtney, while a shock, was not unexpected, given his age, but... Sixty-three? That's about the same age as my mum...

So yes, what everyone else has said - just sad, sad news. I'll be honest, Sarah Jane, through no fault of her own, has never really been one of my most loved companions from classic Who, but I've loved SJA to bits since it started, and... I'll be honest, this, happening when it has has taken a bit of the shine off my excitement for S6 starting on Saturday. Although that's completely beside the point, it's her family who we should be thinking of. I've lost a number of family members to cancer over the years, and it's not pleasant at all.

*sigh*

When is something good going to happen in 2011?

Fic: Last Train from Iskenderun

This was written in response to a prompt as part of the [livejournal.com profile] who_like_giants  ficathon, which seeks to highlight minor canon characters from the Whoniverse and also OCs interacting with canon characters. The prompt was: Bea Nelson-Stanley (Bea/her husband Edgar) (from the SJA story Eye of the Gorgon) - One or more of their adventures in their younger days. Of course, being an enormous fanw*nker, I had to throw in a couple of other minor characters from classic Who as well…and a certain NuWho-era organisation for good measure… I don’t really speak or write German; the German-language dialogue is all courtesy of Google’s translation tool and may therefore be, well, rubbish… Oh yeah, and as I was writing this, I was picturing Edgar as being played by Matt Smith, for some reason… Doctor Who, Sarah Jane Adventures and all of their associated copyrights very, very definitely do not belong to me.

Fic: The Volteze Falcon, Part Six: Kobayashi Unimportant

The jaw-dropping conclusion! The heist of the aeon ends as all great heists do, with double-crossing, backstabbing and generally unethical behaviour. The agenda of the mysterious Kobayashi Unimportant is finally revealed - please try not to laugh too hard at the big twist - this started out as an attempt at crazy crack after all, even if it did kind of...grow... Oh, and I hope Harry's old man's attitude to certain things doesn't offend too much. So, Mexican standoffs! Twist and counter-twist! Daring escapes! Stunning betrayals! All this and naked bottoms too - because I'm out of control, people!

Fic: The Volteze Falcon, Part Five: Captain John Hart

The next instalment, and hopefully some explanation as to just what the heck John Hart, of all people, is doing on the bus with the rest of the gang. Also a few more hints at just what is going on here, hopefully not giving the game away too obviously (but I worry I kind of am); although it's not as if the big "twist" makes much sense anyway even when it does get revealed in the next part. This was supposed to be the last part, but ended up not being, mainly because I spent so much wordage describing Jack and John's big stupid slapstick swordfight. Because I am a child! And more shippy, slashy unnecessariness for thems as likes that kind of thing...

Fic: The Volteze Falcon, Part Four: Captain Jack Harkness

So, on we go. Jack is the main character in this part, and I try to take into account all that he went through in Children of Earth, and how it might have affected his character. I understand that not everybody enjoyed that story and/or wants to consider it canon, but I did, for what it's worth, and I hope my referencing it here doesn't ruin this chapter for some people. So, be warned; possible CoE spoilers! Also, more about the mysterious Kobayashi Unimportant and who he might be and what his game is; I suspect I may give the game away totally in this part, but hopefully not. And some stuff that might not make a whole lot of sense if you haven't seen the recent SJA story "The Mad Woman in the Attic", but hopefully that won't spoil people's enjoyment.

Fic: The Volteze Falcon, Part Three: Lady Christina de Souza

The next thrilling instalment! And our featured character this time is the Lady Christina, who I'll admit I found hard to dislike in her TV outing, despite her obvious criminal tendencies. I seem to spend a lot of this part laying on the detail concerning the planet Hecate and its weird retro-Soviet regime, but all I can say is that amused me in some strange way. And a bit of completely random shippiness rears its head here, as truly random as anything generated by the Random Pairings Generator, but in this case the only thing I have to blame is my own puerile imagination...

Fic: The Volteze Falcon, Part Two: Jenny

Well, here's the next part of this, and for some reason it doesn't seem quite like the freewheeling fun I imagined it was going to be when I started out; there seems to be a bit of angstiness creeping in, mainly I think because of Jack's involvement. I know how divisive CoE was for Torchwood fans, but I thought it was great, and I at least try here to acknowledge the effects the events of that story must have had on Jack. I don't know if he comes across here as a more mature, subdued figure or just a whinger (although it's not as if he doesn't have plenty to whinge about!). And Jenny takes centre stage here. I make no secret of the fact that The Doctor's Daughter is one of my less favoured NuWho stories, and she is quite far from being my favourite NuWho character, but I try to be fair to her here. This is just my take on her; your mileage, as they say, may vary.

Yeah, I know I'm a bit behind the times in sharing my thoughts on the second episode of "The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith", but you know how it is. I started writing some crazy fic about Captain Jack and a grab-bag of other random characters pulling of a robbery, in spaaaaacccee. Kind of thing that happens to me all the time.

Thoughts, and SPOILERS, follow: )
