Back after another lengthy hiatus - I found this chapter quite difficult to write, conscious that I needed to finish the Brig-Gilmore dialogue in this part while making sure not to miss out all of the fanw*nky Who references (and one non-Who reference - let me know if you spot it!) that I wanted to shoehorn in...! Again, I'm trying to give the Counter-Measures audios their due respect while probably riding roughshod over their continuity... ;)

And if you like this, why not read my other, closely-related fic Focal Point, which covers some of the same ground?

And do you know what? It's been a long while since we had one of those UNIT Dating posts, hasn't it...? I may need to remedy that sometime soon...

Inspired by a plot point in the Series 8 finale; I may be mixing the timeline up a bit, but this is the first thing that came to mind.

In which the Colonel and the Air Commodore continue to discuss the state of the world, including some Brig biographical details based solely on my own wild speculations and quite a few fanw*nky references to various Who stories - see if you can spot them all. :D I'm trying to at least acknowledge the Counter-Measures audios here, but not sweating any potential "canon" contradictions, if that makes any sense.

And my my, yes, it looks like there might be another UNIT Dating post coming your way soon... I know you're all looking forward to it. ;D

After another lengthy delay in getting these chapters posted, the Colonel continues his slow immersion into the secret world, meeting another character from classic Who and incidentally demonstrating that whatever aspersions Three may have cast at him he's far better at soldiering than he is at marriage...

And those of you who've been following my ramblings will know what this means - another chapter up, I can allow myself another UNIT dating post! :D

Apologies for the delay in getting this next chapter up. The skulduggery thickens, but the Colonel is starting to get some ideas about how he might fight back, and a historic first meeting is on the cards (if the two participants only knew it at the time)...

The next part, in which the Brigadier-to-be gets more indications that something fishy is going on in the aftermath of the Tube unpleasantness and has some aspersions cast upon his character. General Thatcher (by then promoted to Field Marshal) is mentioned in the novelisation of The Invasion but not in the televised story. And is also apparently an unexpected movie buff...!

The next chapter, in which Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart continues to deal with the aftermath of the events in London, with a glimpse of the beginning of the crisis and of family life with the Lethbridge-Stewarts. Less in the way of military minutiae and more plot in the next one, hopefully. :)

I know I have enough WIPs on the go as it is without starting another multi-parter, but this one's been burning a hole in my imagination since I re-watched The Web of Fear last weekend and demands to be told... Based on his remarkable headwear in that story and some stuff I've read online during the week I'm now acting on the assumption that the future-Brig was not actually in the Guards as specified in some spinoff media (and by the tie he's wearing in Mawdryn Undead!) but some unspecified Scottish infantry regiment similar to, but not exactly like, the Royal Highland Fusiliers. There are various spellings of his friend Billy's surname online but Ian Marter opts for "Routledge" in his novelisation of The Invasion and who am I to argue? :)

Funny thing, really, but I don't normally get sentimental about the passing away of people I only know through the medium of television, yet I'm feeling kind of wistful as I type this, with a manly something in my manly eye, or something.

Certainly, Nicholas Courtney had a longer, fuller life than a lot of people ever have, but I can't help feeling that, you know, with all due respect to Sarah Jane Adventures, the world would somehow be a better, finer place had the Brig ever got the chance to cross paths with one of the new series Doctors.

This is a nice obituary that provides a reminder that there was much more to Nicholas Courtney than the Brigadier:

And this is a fine tribute in pictures from [livejournal.com profile] calapine:

So, in response to the following meme, which I picked up from [personal profile] thisbluespirit
Reply to this meme by yelling "Words!" and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Then post them in your LJ and explain what they mean to you.

And these were the words she gave me, revealing that she has been paying more attention to my online preoccupations/obsessions than I have XD:

Brigadier, UNIT, Torchwood, dragons, Romana

Fic: Battlelines, Part 14

So, the next gripping part! Hopefully, this is the end of the dry talky stuff for now; I can't promise any outright action, or indeed dragons, just yet, but hopefully from here on in stuff will start _happening_ again. Hopefully. :D Some Bambera and Ancelyn for this part, and indeed some Bambera/Ancelyn, for those as likes that sort of thing... My understanding of how medieval swordfighting works is based on watching those arms and armour type programmes on the History Channel and the like and therefore may not be the most accurate; don't try it at home, kids!

Fic: Battlelines, Part 13

Well, I suppose it's like buses; you wait ages for one, and then three come along at once... I've been on a bit of a roll with this one, but a frustrating roll; I've written enough for about three new chapters since the weekend, but then had a bit of a crisis of confidence and have gone back to rework it all, ending up with this (for now):

www.whofic.com/viewstory.php

It seems to be taking me an awful lot of words to get through all of this set up without any meaningful plot or action seeming to take place. I sort of feel that I need to go through all of this stuff in order to establish the setting and so what happens when the action starts makes at least a bit of sense. Your mileage, as they say, may vary; maybe I need an editor! So, the Brig gets shown round the castle, shares some thoughts with some of the supporting cast, and starts to hatch his plan...

Fic: Battlelines, Part 12

As unlikely as it may seem, it is nevertheless true; two chapters in one day!

In the latest installment, not much happens, once again, but we do get more of a glimpse of the Thirteen Worlds and some of their inhabitants, and a bit of a look at the amazing castle of Camelot itself ("On second thoughts, let us not go to Camelot - 'tis a silly place."). Mercenaries, I might add, were as important to medieval warfare as they seem to be to most Eric Saward Who stories... Of course, Doctor Who and its associated copyrights do not belong to me but rather to the BBC and their original creators.

Anyway:

Fic: Battlelines, Part 11

Somehow, I managed to resist the urge to draw any more fanart and do some writing instead (I assure you, this represents a non-trivial feat of willpower for me in my current procrastinating state!). So, the Brig's finally in the Thirteen Worlds, but it's still business as usual; talking about the UN and stuff. I hope it's not getting boring or repetitive for anybody. As always, Doctor Who and its accoutrements in no way belong to me, but rather to the BBC and their individual creators.
