Eleventy Fest Unveiled!

Well, the names have now been named in the case of the [community profile] eleventyfest fanwork exchange, so I can now reveal and thank the people who wrote the lovely fics I was reccing last week. Please if you haven't, go and give them a read. They're all great:

Title: Shenanigans
By: [personal profile] ljgeoff
Recipient: JJPor
Rating: T
Character(s)/Ship(s): Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Canton Everett Delaware III, Jack Harkness
Summary: Canton wasn't expecting aliens when he walked into the bar.
Content Notes: None

Title: Bounce
By: [personal profile] nancybrown
Words: 5,470
Type: Gen
Age: Teen
Characters: The Doctor (11th), Amy/Rory, Vastra/Jenny, Strax, Canton Everett Delaware III
Author's Note: A mysterious device affects the lives of the Doctor and his friends.

Title: Trouble in the Deep
By: [personal profile] lyras
Words: 4,940
Type: Gen, F/F, F/M
Age: Teen
Characters: The Doctor (11th), River, Amy/Rory, Vastra/Jenny, Strax, Silurians
Author's Note: Something wicked is afoot under London and Vastra can't stop dreaming. Jenny calls in the Doctor, River calls in Amy and Rory, and the problem turns out to be much bigger than anyone imagined.

And this is my own effort, made for [personal profile] akashasheiress. I'm going to post it to the Teaspoon at some point, but it was written in a bit of a hurry and there are a couple of things I want to revise about it before I do, so it might not be for a while. Anyway:

Title: Weak
By: [personal profile] jjpor
Words: 10,241
Type: Gen, F/M
Age: Teen
Characters: Eleventh Doctor/River, Amy/Rory, Brian Williams, Ace, various others mentioned or referenced.
Author's Note: Written for akashasheiress as part of the Eleventyfest ficathon. The Doctor's definitely going to have that talk with River. You know, *that* talk. Honestly, he is. Any day now. Any day now...

Rec: Yet Another Cool Fic I've Received As Part of Eleventy Fest!

I almost missed this one as a result of basically not being very attentive when it came to checking on the comm, but I'm extremely glad it was brought to my attention, because it's great. :D

Title: Shenanigans
By: Anonymous
Recipient: JJPor
Rating: T
Character(s)/Ship(s): Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Canton Everett Delaware III, Jack Harkness
Summary: Canton wasn't expecting aliens when he walked into the bar.
Content Notes: None

Why you should check it out: As with the ones I recced the other night, it's really well written and ticks numerous of my fannish boxes. It's got Amy and Rory in New York post-Angels, doing far more than making the best of it and being quite adorable about it too. It's got a very well-drawn Captain Jack capturing something of the inner complexity going on behind the façade he keeps up most of the time. It's got drunk!Canton. It's got a couple of cheeky in-passing crossover shout-outs. Good stuff all round, really. I've had an extremely good Eleventy Fest, all told. :)

Recs: Two Cool Fics I've Received As Part of Eleventyfest

I don't know who wrote them for me yet (all will be revealed next week), but I'd like to recommend the two excellent fics I have been gifted as part of the [community profile] eleventyfest fanworkathon:

Title: Bounce
By: Anonymous
Words: 5,470
Type: Gen
Age: Teen
Characters: The Doctor (11th), Amy/Rory, Vastra/Jenny, Strax, Canton Everett Delaware III
Author's Note: A mysterious device affects the lives of the Doctor and his friends.

Why you should read it: Because it's great. It's basically a compendium of some of my current favourite things/obsessions: "Classic" Eleven+Amy+Rory; the Consulting Detective, wife and butler; Mr Delaware being basically the coolest dude ever. And it's really well written, and even includes glimpses of Historical Torchwood and an ace in-passing X-Files reference too. Good stuff. Ticks all my boxes.

Title: Trouble in the Deep
By: Anonymous
Words: 4,940
Type: Gen, F/F, F/M
Age: Teen
Characters: The Doctor (11th), River, Amy/Rory, Vastra/Jenny, Strax, Silurians
Author's Note: Something wicked is afoot under London and Vastra can't stop dreaming. Jenny calls in the Doctor, River calls in Amy and Rory, and the problem turns out to be much bigger than anyone imagined.

Why you should read this one too: Because it's also great, again ticks numerous of my idiosyncratic boxes. And it's a well-thought-out story with a mystery that only deepens as it goes on before being resolved in a way that makes more sense the more you think about it. As well as exploring something of the condition of the Doctor and the life he leads, through looking at the relationships of those around him. The characterisation of Jenny in particular is great. Also good stuff.

Well, go on, then, read them! :)

Because I Am Easily Led...

It seemed like a good idea at the time, having seen [personal profile] thisbluespirit and others on my flist with them, so...

My Trope_Bingo Card )

In fact, it still seems like a good idea - I'm already forming plans and seeing which of my existing plans fit in with items on the table (more than I expected!). And October 31 seems like a long way away (although I suspect it won't when it's, say, October 20 and I still haven't done anything!). Well, we will see how this plays out...

Fic: Torchwood 1917: The Blood-Dimmed Tide

Title: Torchwood 1917: The Blood-Dimmed Tide
Chapter Eleven
(All chapters)
Rating: Teen
Characters: WW1-era Torchwood: Gerald Carter, Harriet Derbyshire, Lydia Childs, Douglas Caldwell, Dr Charles Quinn; classic Who monsters to remain anonymous for the moment
Genres: Action/Adventure,Drama,General,Horror,Mystery,Series
Warnings: Explicit Violence,Swearing (It's...Torchwood! :D)
Summary: As the Great War rages on, Torchwood Three discover more frightening things than U-boats lurking beneath the cruel sea
Word count: 33,914 (so far)
Author's Notes:
After a rather long hiatus, the next mind-boggling chapter! In which Gerald and Harriet continue their investigations around the ominously-named Devil's Cove, and meet yet another new character without actually coming any closer to solving the central mystery. It's like the WWI Twin Peaks!

Fic: Last Day

Story: Last Day
Author: [personal profile] jjpor
Rating: Gen
Word Count: 993
Author's Summary: No drama, no tears. Just another day at the office.
Characters/Pairings: The Seventh Doctor, Ace
Warnings: None

Written for eve11's Flash Fiction Comment-a-Thon on the [community profile] who_at_50 comm (yeah, I know, 900+ words is stretching any sane definition of "Flash"...). And something I've thought about for a while - none of the various endings offered to Seven and Ace in the various "expanded universe" continuities really satisfy me, and most of them have in any case been somewhat Jossed by the throwaway reference in the SJA episode The Death of the Doctor. I like to think, though, that however they parted in the end would be more Warriors' Gate than The Angels Take Manhattan. This is one possible version.

Flash Fiction Comment-a-Thon on Who@50

As a sort of prelude to the impending first leg of the Who@50 fanwork-fest, eve11 has posted the first round of her Flash Fiction Comment-a-Thon on the Livejournal version of the community. Sounds like a fun exercise and a good warm-up for those fictioneers among you who will want to be participating in the main event.

eve11 has posted rules here. I hope those of you who are still active on the old LJ will check it out. Quick, before the slots fill up! :)

Plan B

Following on from my modest proposal yesterday...

Having received a bit of feedback from my good flisters [livejournal.com profile] akashasheiress and [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook and considered what they had to say, I'm now proposing a revised schedule for the 50th anniversary ficathons I plan to run next year on the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary comm I'm going to set up:

(The Daleks') Masterplan: )
jjpor: (Who@50)

A Modest Proposal...

No, I'm not about to suggest eating babies.

As those of you who have been keeping abreast of my woefully infrequent LJ posts during 2012 may have gathered, one thing above all things is currently weighing heavily upon my already wobbly mind. No, not the allegedly-imminent Mayan Apocalypse. I have it on good information that somebody found a temple inscription recently in Honduras or somewhere which basically translated as "Sorry, only joking!"

Rather, what impinges more and more upon my consciousness as this year draws all-too-quickly to its end is the fact that

Fic: Torchwood 1917: The Blood-Dimmed Tide

Title: Torchwood 1917: The Blood-Dimmed Tide
Chapter Ten
(All chapters)
Rating: Teen
Characters: WW1-era Torchwood: Gerald Carter, Harriet Derbyshire, Lydia Childs, Douglas Caldwell, Dr Charles Quinn; classic Who monsters to remain anonymous for the moment
Genres: Action/Adventure,Drama,General,Horror,Mystery,Series
Warnings: Explicit Violence,Swearing (It's...Torchwood! :D)
Summary: As the Great War rages on, Torchwood Three discover more frightening things than U-boats lurking beneath the cruel sea
Word count: 30,245 (so far)
Author's Notes: After something of a gap, the next part! In which Gerald and Harriet continue their investigations, Harriet is not impressed by Gerald's driving, Gerald continues to show some worrying opinions regarding the land where he lives and works, and the dynamic duo meet a new character or two who might have useful information...

And as ever, please give the hardworking Teaspoon mods time to validate!

Happy Birthday, lost_spook!

It's a bit late in the day, I know, but I hope you've had a good'un and that you're feeling better than you were last time I was wishing you many happy returns.

I've written something. It might be birthday fic. It might also be a bit long, but I hope you'll manage to read it (when it gets validated on Teaspoon, that is) and that you enjoy it:

Fic: Torchwood 1917: The Blood-Dimmed Tide

Title: Torchwood 1917: The Blood-Dimmed Tide
Chapter Nine
(All chapters)
Rating: Teen
Characters: WW1-era Torchwood: Gerald Carter, Harriet Derbyshire, Lydia Childs, Douglas Caldwell, Dr Charles Quinn; classic Who monsters to remain anonymous for the moment
Genres: Action/Adventure,Drama,General,Horror,Mystery,Series
Warnings: Explicit Violence,Swearing (It's...Torchwood! :D)
Summary: As the Great War rages on, Torchwood Three discover more frightening things than U-boats lurking beneath the cruel sea
Word count: 26,327 (so far)
Author's Notes: In which Gerald picks Lydia's brains for information on fishy deities, Bible quotes and the poetry of John Milton (Lydia knows all), Harriet demonstrates yet again that she is far from being just a pretty face, and we attempt to sort-of recreate a classic Who moment through the medium of sandwiches. Any errors in matters of the Welsh language or indeed mysterious "true life" tales of the sea are entirely down to my own over-reliance on Wikipedia and Google's translation tool. :)

And while you're waiting for the Teaspoon mods to validate - shocking evidence relating to this very case, only recently unearthed from the Torchwood Archives:

Genres: Action/Adventure,Drama,General,Horror,Mystery,Series
Warnings: Explicit Violence,Swearing (It's...Torchwood! :D)
Summary: As the Great War rages on, Torchwood Three discover more frightening things than U-boats lurking beneath the cruel sea
Word count: 22,958 (so far)
Author's Notes: After a brief hiatus, the next gripping instalment! In which Gerald and Harriet react to their experience in the infirmary (and share a shippy moment), Lt Millington once again acts like a creepazoid and Lydia has to have a talk with Douglas. And yes, the sandwiches are sort of a fanw*nky thing...

Fic: Torchwood 1917: The Blood-Dimmed Tide

Title: Torchwood 1917: The Blood-Dimmed Tide

Rating: Teen
Characters: WW1-era Torchwood: Gerald Carter, Harriet Derbyshire, Lydia Childs, Douglas Caldwell, Dr Charles Quinn; classic Who monsters to remain anonymous for the moment
Genres: Action/Adventure,Drama,General,Horror,Mystery,Series
Warnings: Explicit Violence,Swearing (this is Torchwood, after all...)
Summary: As the Great War rages on, Torchwood Three discover more frightening things than U-boats lurking beneath the cruel sea
Word count: 16,740 (to date)
Author's Notes: The next part, in which Harriet reflects on the war, Gerald uses an epithet directed at the French and we come a step closer to meeting the German survivor alluded to in previous parts. And yes, Lieutenant Millington, as you may guess from the name, his apparent misogyny and paranoia and general air of creepiness, is indeed the bloke out of Curse of Fenric, before he got older and got promotions.

Characters: WW1-era Torchwood: Gerald Carter, Harriet Derbyshire, Lydia Childs, Douglas Caldwell, Dr Charles Quinn; classic Who monsters to remain anonymous for the moment
Genres: Action/Adventure,Drama,General,Horror,Mystery,Series
Warnings: Explicit Violence,Swearing (It's Torchwood...!)
Summary: As the Great War rages on, Torchwood Three discover more frightening things than U-boats lurking beneath the cruel sea
Word count: 13,521 (up to now)
Author's Notes: In which the team briefing continues, and is mercifully over by the end of the chapter. Again, possibly a tad too much "aww, my mostly-OC characters, it's been too long..." and less moving the story forward, but still. As far as I can make out, the idea of the Bermuda Triangle wasn't really invented until the 1950s, so Lydia is a bit vague about it here, and we know the Mary Celeste was down to either time-travelling Daleks or Sapphire & Steel so take your pick. As for Harriet's diehard support for the WW1 war effort, it's the main thing I take away from her minute or so of screen time - she certainly seemed very keen on Field Marshal Haig anyway.

Fic: Torchwood 1917: The Blood-Dimmed Tide

Title: Torchwood 1917: The Blood-Dimmed Tide
Chapter Four
Rating: Teen
Characters: WW1-era Torchwood: Gerald Carter, Harriet Derbyshire, Lydia Childs, Douglas Caldwell, Dr Charles Quinn; classic Who monsters to remain anonymous for the moment
Genres: Action/Adventure,Drama,General,Horror,Mystery,Series
Warnings: Explicit Violence,Swearing (the Torchwood way!)
Summary: As the Great War rages on, Torchwood Three discover more frightening things than U-boats lurking beneath the cruel sea
Word count: 10,167 (to date)
Author's Notes: In which Lydia starts to lecture the troops. Quite a bit of character stuff here and Lydia's thoughts on her fellow Team Torchwood members (yes, yes, I know they're all de facto OCs...but I like 'em ;D), although I'll admit the plot doesn't advance much past the last chapter. My retelling here of the story of Room 40 and the RN's caginess when it came to actually using the intelligence it provided is basically true to the best of my knowledge.

And while you're waiting for the hard-pressed Teaspoon mods to validate, an illustration in similar vein to my earlier Sea Devils effort:

Title: Torchwood 1917: The Blood-Dimmed Tide
Chapter 3
Rating: Teen
Characters: Gerald and Harriet and WW1 Torchwood: Lydia Childs, Douglas Caldwell, Dr Charles Quinn; classic Who monsters to remain anonymous for the moment
Genres: Action/Adventure,Drama,General,Horror,Mystery,Series
Warnings: Explicit Violence,Swearing (it's Torchwood!)
Summary: As the Great War rages on, Torchwood Three discover more frightening things than U-boats lurking beneath the cruel sea
Word count: 7549 (so far!)
Author's Notes: In which Gerald receives the lowdown from his boss in London, Colonel Enderby. Enderby is my OC, I'm afraid, although he and his boss, Control, are named in honour of characters from John Le Carre's George Smiley oeuvre. "Room 40", of course, was real. If you know which body of water the real Urquhart Castle overlooks, you may have an inkling of the sort of direction this story may be headed in.

Fic: Torchwood 1917: The Blood-Dimmed Tide (Pt 2)

Title: Torchwood 1917: The Blood-Dimmed Tide
Chapter 2
Rating: Teen
Characters: Gerald and Harriet and the WW1-era Torchwood gang, Lydia Childs, Douglas Caldwell, Dr Charles Quinn; classic Who monsters to remain anonymous for the moment
Genres: Action/Adventure,Drama,General,Horror,Mystery,Series
Warnings: Explicit Violence,Swearing (as per usual)
Summary: As the Great War rages on, Torchwood Three discover more frightening things than U-boats lurking beneath the cruel sea
Word count: 5247 (up to now)
Author's Notes: In which we are reintroduced to Gerald and Harriet and other members of the Retro-Torchwood gang. To those of you new to the crazy thrill-ride that is Retro-Torchwood, Gerald and Harriet appear (briefly) onscreen in the Torchwood S2 episode "To The Last Man", while the rest are drawn from the dubiously-canonical fluff that appeared on the BBC TW website back when the episode aired, those many moons ago. Although it is fair to say that I have...fleshed them all out a bit. So yes, unashamed Gerald/Harriet shipping. And bonus points to anyone identifying the classic Who story and the famous "real life" WW1-related paranormal case obliquely referenced by Lydia and Harriet near the end of the chapter...
