Baby Makes Three

“It’s going to mean a lot of adjusting for both of us,” Romana murmured later that night; not that there was such a thing as night and day in the TARDIS, but it had been night when they left their last port of call. And now it was later.

“Oh, I don’t know,” said the Doctor, encircling her in his massive arm. “I’m sure we’ll get used to having him around, the little tyke.”

“I don’t know whether I’d describe Adric as a little tyke,” Romana commented, nestling her head against his chest. “I wouldn’t call him a loveable youngster…”

“While he’s travelling with us, the two of you are just going to have to get on,” the Doctor told her, looking up at the bedroom ceiling in apparent thought. “I mean, it’s not as if he’s going to make that much of a difference to our routine…”

“Well, I think he will,” Romana protested.

“How so?”

“He’s already got us sneaking around to each other’s bedrooms after lights out, as if it’s something we should be furtive about,” she pointed out. “That can’t be healthy.”

“I thought it was quite romantic,” the Doctor grinned.

“In any case,” Romana went on, “our whole group dynamic has shifted.”

“Ah,” he said, sagely. “What you mean is two’s company and three’s a crowd…”

“No,” said Romana, slightly puzzled. “No, I mean our group dynamic has shifted; if I’d meant to say anything about crowds I would have done so.”

“Well, it doesn’t have to be a change for the worse,” the Doctor insisted.

“Doctor,” she said, “he was going to let those vampires sacrifice me!”

“Now, he explained about all of that…”

“Not very convincingly.”

“As I say,” continued the Doctor, undeterred, “it doesn’t have to be for the worse. Think of him as a little brother for K9.” Romana raised her head and stared at him for a moment in mild astonishment.

“I’m going to sleep,” she decided eventually, rolling over so that she had her back to him. Silence descended over the bedroom, broken after a few minutes by the Doctor’s voice:

“Psst!”

“Yes, Doctor?” she muttered, drowsily.

“Do you know what I think?” he asked, wide-eyed.

“No. What?”

“I think our whole group dynamic has shifted!”

Romana hit him with the pillow.
