I just thought I'd post something because it seems like I haven't been interacting very much on lj for the last couple of weeks, and you know, I'm bored and hot and stuff.

Seriously, I haven't slept for about a week, or so it seems, what with the heat and everything. Yep, I'm one of those people who spends all winter moaning about the cold and all summer moaning about the heat. It has been hot, though. They say it's going to be cooler tomorrow; we shall see.

I've been trying to write fic, a bit of the fan variety, and (shock) a bit of original too. I'm beating my head against the brick wall that is Battlelines (seriously, every page is like pulling out one of my own teeth!); Battlelines is indeed a harsh mistress, and at the moment I'm considering cheating on her with some entirely different fic, but  a) I'm not sure which of my many fic ideas I should pursue, and b) at this rate I'll never finish the thing. My "original" "writing" has mainly consisted of using Google and Wikipedia to find out more about nearby stars deemed most likely to have Earthlike planets, chimpanzees, and WW2-era anti-tank weapons (yep, armaments pr0n!) and to brush up on my knowledge of the First Crusade - if you can work out how all of those elements go together, you're welcome to nick my story idea! ;D

And I've been watching The Wire - I realise I am, like, the last person in the universe to actually jump aboard this particular bandwagon, and I'm still not convinced it really is, as claimed, the bestest television programme, like, evah!, but it's been keeping me entertained. I'm easily pleased.

Anyway, enough talk!

It's been seriously hot in the Faroes, too. Everyone loves it, of course, because this is the kind of place where you get naked if it's over 15 degrees. Me, I get heaches and sore eyes, so it's not that much fun for me.

I guess you're too hot to write Jungle Fic? Or maybe it could inspire you!;)

Anyway, I'll be up all night with a paper. The same one that I didn't hand in that other time. So if you can't sleep, you're welcome to chat and stuff.

I did end up sleeping quite well, last night, actually; I think it was more tiredness than it actually being any cooler; it's still hot today, just not quite as hot. Haven't noticed any actual nakedness about the place, but then we are British! XD

Jungle fic? You know, that sounds like an idea; you'll be the first to know if I do get any more of that written...

It's the songs that stop me from writing that one more quickly; rhyming = not my strong suit...

Lol, when I say naked I mean ''tank tops and shorts''.

I recced ''Dancing'' on [livejournal.com profile] calufrax, by the way. I hope it didn't cause anyone to overheat.

Well, good, because...I had developed a disturbing mental image of summer in the Faroes there... XD

I saw that on Calufrax; thanks for the nice write-up you gave it!

I'll have you know that a British music writers described Faroese girls as a collection of ''Johansons and Winslets'' with a few Bjorks thrown in for good measure!

I saw that on Calufrax; thanks for the nice write-up you gave it!

It's fully deserving. I can't imagine that second dance stayed a dance for very long...

Er, you're probably right, but I leave writing that anatomical sort of stuff up to other people who have more of an aptitude for it...

Sounds like an interesting sort of mix; would you class yourself as a Winslet or a Bjork, then? :-)

It's the suggestiveness that makes the fic. Although one should hope that they didn't just stop at that after getting so worked up...

I'm definitily not a Bjork. Much too blonde and blue-eyed.

Here's to hoping the sleeping thing improves. I hate the heat in summer and can't sleep as soon as it gets too hot. However, I accidentally came up with the cunning plan of moving to the NE coast, where I can spend all winter and all summer complaining about the cold. ("Heatwave? What do you mean, heatwave?") Heh. Although, the hot weather has made it over here as of about Tuesday, but yesterday it rained a lot and it's cooler again. And it's probably freezing on the beach. (Last time we had a week of nice weather, it was blazing hot and I walked from here to the next town via the beach and I ended up wanting a coat and jeans badly. Possibly a woolly hat. ;-D)

As to your fic-writing, something new is always a pleasure, but I do feel reading Battlelines (as I implied - and no I did not mean this is getting as dull and endless as one of those interminable fantasy trilogies, btw) that maybe I should actually be saying 'STOP STOP STOP! This is turning into an original novel all over the place and a good one, too. Go away, dump the Who stuff and write it so that someone publishes it and I get to read it properly in my armchair.' Or something to that effect. Seriously. And while I don't like to go round insulting people, I don't say things like that without meaning them.

You could always just write more with Ace Rimmer and DW in...

From: [identity profile] jjpor.livejournal.com
I don't think that's insulting - I think it's good advice, actually. I don't know about rewriting Battlelines as an original fic, because I've always thought it's pretty dependent on the reader knowing about Battlefield to make any kind of sense of it, but I guess that could be remedied with some rewriting. Actually, the other original fic I've started noodling about with again (I've been thinking about it for maybe a year or two now, but in my usual manner not managed to get much down in writing), goes into some of the same sort of stuff, I suppose - techno-medievalism and armaments pr0n, but in the far, far future, IN SPAAACCEE... and I don't know if I should go into any more detail than that on the intrawebs, where Walls Have Ears. ;D

I don't think I have the willpower or discipline to just stop whoficcing, cold turkey, in favour of original stuff, but I am going to make a real effort to actually get some original stuff written as well, instead of just thinking about it. I do have a sort of Quixotic urge to finish the Who version of Battlelines, and the Sontarans-up-the-Jungle thing, though, however long that may take.

And, yeah, the heat continues here; it has been a bit cooler today and yesterday, but still hot. I just hope this isn't the summer, right here, because I've got my fortnight off coming in a couple of weeks, and I don't want it to be grey and showery like it was last year...

Yes, well reading Battlelines it feels like you've found your 'thing', if that makes sense. (I put it that way, not that i know whether or not it ever needed finding...) and there;s basically all the Battlefields related stuff and then the Medievalism and spin on Arthurian myths that really isn't all from any version of Battlefield.

But I am not going to complain about more fic. I didn't mean stop writing. Just stop writing Battlelines. Erm. In the nicest possible way. I am more than happy to read it to the end. :-)

*takes foot out of mouth*

I understand the wish to finish things. Strangers at fairhurst I kept writing as my unfinished fanfic for years when I didn't have internet access. Posting the start of a story is kind of like a promise. One thing if it's languishing somewhere privately on a pc, another again if it's been posted. But what I meant is don't beat yourself over the head about finishing Battlelines. It may come too close to some of the original fic, maybe? (Sontarans in the Jungle, however, is never going to happen in original fic and I demand it gets finished. ;-D)

Plus, I still want that X-Files crossover. :-p

From: [identity profile] jjpor.livejournal.com
No, I do know what you mean; it's one thing to write something like the Sontarans thing, which is purely Who fanfic, and then again to write something like Battlelines which contains a lot of stuff that is above and beyond fanfic to the extent that there is a lot of stuff in there that is not Who-related in the slightest and might, indeed, best be used as the beginning of an original fiction. I'm not saying I won't write any more of it, but I agree that that time and effort might be better used on other projects.

Having said that, I do enjoy writing the Who stuff, and there are still a lot of things I would like to get out there in some form. Like the X-Files thing, or the AU thing with the Master working for UNIT instead of Three, or indeed the rest of the Four/Romana/Sontarans thing...

So, we're on the same page, then. XD

I've failed to do any writing of anything whatsoever this weekend, though, between tennis, Troughton, sleep and various other things. And I don't even particularly like tennis, but I've been hooked watching the doubles. Strange.

Oh yeah, I intend to do both; I think the thing was that Battlelines has got to the point where it's original fic in all but the names of some of the characters, so you know, I might as well actually write something original in the time I might otherwise spend forcing myself to finish that. :-D

The nonsensical miscellany being researched for your original intrigues me greatly. Like Lost_Spook I'm also going to bang you over the head with the repeated plea of "please write something original because you could totally be a published author"

Though, I won't say no to fic either, because I'm a greedy bugger. I need to read the latest chapter of the Sontaran Jungle epic.

You just want to have your cake and eat it too, don't you, Clocket (which is an expression I've never understood, because, having procured cake, what else would you be planning on doing with it)? :D

Yes, keep banging me on the head by the way; Pavlovian conditioning is the only way I'll learn...

So many plotbunnies beckoning to me, though; hissing "join ussss! join ussss!" in their scary, undead bunny voices... I hope I can hold out better than that vicar in Curse of Fenric; if only I believed in Soviet communism or something (and don't get me started on the unfortunate political and moral implications of Seven and Ace palling around with an apparently devout disciple of the 20th century's _other_ most evil dictator, because, well, don't)... XD

Sorry, what was I talking about again? Oh, yes; original fiction, do it; fanfic too, if there's time. Got it.

One can believe in the Revolution and in Communism without necessarily believing in Stalin, surely? I mean, Soren's faith seems to be vested more in Leninist ideals than in the current incarnation of the Soviet Union...

Oh yeah, I mean, the gulag was full of true-believer communists like Sorin, often clinging to the old "if only Comrade Stalin knew of my plight, he'd sort it out..." as they dug gold in Kolyma/got shot in some cellar/got sent to walk across German minefields like those Cybermen in Five Doctors. I guess he does seem like someone who believes in the propaganda rather than being an active proponent of Stalinist terror or whatever; I mean, don't get me wrong, the whole thing was built on some good ideals, but it was rotten from about the point they stamped out the sailors in Kronstadt, if not before then.

Having said that, I dunno; it seems a bit strange to have the Doctor running around with minions of totalitarian regimes without at least commenting on it, although he did have all the vampires and stuff to distract him, I suppose. And maybe it isn't so strange, because of course Three once claimed, somewhat bizarrely, to be a good friend of Chairman Mao's, but then he did claim a lot of things like that.
