Fic: The Spartans, Part Nine: The Road to Glory
The calm before the storm, maybe; this and the previous part were supposed to be all one chapter, but they kind of...grew. More stuff about the difference between "history" and actual events, and more evidence that these guys have such different outlooks from our own that pigeonholing them as goodies and baddies does them an injustice. Hope Polly doesn't come across as too weepy and pathetic, but she is a bit desperate by that point. Oh, and I totally ship her and Ben, by the way, as if I hadn't made that abundantly clear.

Date: 2009-10-11 05:24 pm (UTC)Thanks for reading this one through to the bitter, bitter end and for all the encouragement (and indeed, placard-waving protests on the front lawn of my castle o' evil). Now, I shall have to go and catch up with UNIT: Stardust, because I've been too busy writing fanfic this week to read any! ;D

Date: 2009-10-11 07:26 pm (UTC)I'm amused that my comment brought in the nail-file. Heh. And once a fic's really steaming ahead, there's no choice between it and anything else! I know the feeling all too well. Doesn't even have to be things anywhere near as good as your 'Spartans' either...
Plus, I have to write this somewhere - I was very amused the other day to find that someone had got to my fic reccing blog by the search 'jjpor alien abduction'. If that wasn't you, you may want to start worrying.

Date: 2009-10-11 08:10 pm (UTC)Ahem. Moving on...
I have a soft centre of soppiness somewhere behind all of the armaments pr0n and people sticking spears through etc. - it's mostly restricted to Doctor/Romana in my Whofic, but yeah, I always feel a bit self-conscious about it afterwards. ;D
And yeah, I reached some sort of tipping point with this one around about Monday, and after that...it just kind of had to get done, you know.

Date: 2009-10-12 07:31 pm (UTC)It was brilliant, the fic, anyway. Just in case I hadn;t made that clear enough already. ;-) And there really can't be enough Ben/Polly of that sort in the world, so I'm glad you managed to let yourself write it. Even if you were wanting to through spears and blow up the world.
It's a multi-shipping world out there; can't just sit around doing Doctor/Romana. Heh. Just look at the Random pairing Generator for the endless fun you could be having.
*coughs* Not of course that I take said prompts and turn them gen. Except for, oh, just about all the time... (Do you ever try it? It can be absolutely priceless and mind-boggling. I'm still wondering to myself about the combination of Mike Yates/The White Guardian/werewolves among others.)

Date: 2009-10-12 08:12 pm (UTC)Yeah, that could work...
I've often thought about some sort of reunion of the old UNIT hands in the 80s or 90s - not necessarily an adventure, just the Brig and Doris catching up with some of the old crew. I don't know if it'd be awkward for old Yatesy, though, after the er...the business. Maybe Buddhism has helped him get over it, or something.
I've played around with the Random pairing Generator, but never tried to write fic off it, although I probably should - you can get some really good things out of those sort of weird prompts, I find - Ten!cake!fic! f'r'instance. I don't think I can do pure shippiness, though - I've got to make some sort of little story up to go with it.
I want to write Harry/Sarah Jane some time, as objectively unlikely as it may be; or some Liz/Brig...yeah...
LOL - just had a random idea - the many women of the Brig - Doris, Liz and that mysterious first wife the novels claimed he had. Mind you, the novels also claimed he had unacknowledged kids running around half of the ex-British Empire. Well, one in Africa somewhere, to be more precise.
And thanks again on the Ben/Polly etc; glad you enjoyed.
As for wasting time on the internet; I find Wikipedia strangely compelling. I know it isn't the most reliable source of information out there, but just by following the links you can find yourself finding out things you never knew you wanted to know. Not that I have time for that sort of thing when I'm working. Ahem.

Date: 2009-10-13 06:14 pm (UTC)And I was going to claim I'd never done one that didn't have a plot, but now I'm contemplating the sarah/Harry one from Happy Endings... Mind you, if it's funny, I always feel that excuses everything! It doesn't of course, but still... And I did indulge in bit of shameless Ben/Pollyness, too. Eek.
You have enough to be going on with, although your responses to weird prompts are priceless, so if you ever do take something from TRPG, then I want to see it!
I'm a bit queasy at the idea of the Brig's love life, but you'd probably win me over as usual. (And of course you could research Doris by watching Carry On films, which is fun. I like to think Doris is a lot like Annie Oakley!)
And, yes, there's something about Yates/The White Guardian/werewolves.

Date: 2009-10-13 08:23 pm (UTC)And yeah, I'm a firm believer that if it's funny it excuses anything at all, but of course there's always the risk some people won't think it's funny...
And as for whether the plot (or lack of it) makes sense, well - there'll be plenty of time for explanations later (and more than explanations if it happens to be Ace Rimmer)!
