Well, it's official - the place where I live was the coldest place in the UK last night at minus 17.6 degrees C. Yes, yes, those of you who live in countries with proper (or more frequent) bad winter weather (or from parts of the UK who've had it bad since before last weekend) can laugh now.

Seriously, though!

Thanks very much! :D I did seriously consider wearing my woolly hat indoors before...which is probably going a bit far, to be honest...

Yeeks - that's approaching zero Fahrenheit: I don't think I've ever been that cold on this side of the Pond either. (Single figures, yes, but not nought.) *sympathies, hot coffee and blankets*

Ugh, zero. I've been that cold and more--hazard of growing up in Wisconsin and one of the reasons I am glad I live in CA now--and it's so not very fun. *hugs jjpor*

Thanks very much! I imagine you get low temperatures like that a bit more regularly in Wisconsin than you do here, though - it's pretty unusually cold for us...

Thanks! Apparently it's the coldest temperature "since records began", which was 1983 so possibly not the most representative sample really... :D

Wow. It hasn't been much above zero for a lot of the past month, but I understand the actual coldest temperature overnight has been -13, so you win. ;-)

I am so not looking forward to driving home tomorrow...

LOL - I'm not sure I could tell the difference between -13 and -17.6 myself... ;D

But no, not a good time to be travelling, so my sympathies and here's wishing you a safe, as painless as possible, journey.

Yikes! I'm not sure whether I should be relieved or jealous... :)

Good luck... don't get buried under the snow!

Relieved is probably the correct response! :D And I'll try not to be...

brrr... I do know from experience how cold that is! We don't get temps that low regularly but I do remember waking up some days last winter and taking a double-take at my car thermometer in the morning because it was showing like -2F (-18.8C). So far our lowest morning temp this year has been 13F (-10.5), but February looms in the future.

When it's that cold the snow feels like corn starch when you walk through it.

Good analogy! ;D I might use that one, one day... But yes, here this kind of thing is pretty rare, really (although we had heavy snow for a while last year too, so I hope it's not a developing trend...). It's been a bit warmer today - some of the snow on roofs etc has melted a bit with the sun on it, and the expected snowfall last night didn't really happen, so it could be - could be - that the worst has passed. I won't jinx things by saying it definitely is, though. :D

My commiserations. If it helps, my Chicago-born S.O. laughed his ass off at me (over the phone while he was in Pennsylvania) when I was in Lake Tahoe overnight on business and didn't know what the what stuff floating to the ground was.

Stay safe and warm.

That was supposed to be "white stuff", not "what stuff.

I am still apparently not used to snow.

I'm trying! :) We don't really get very much snow in this part of the UK either, which is why it's all come as a bit of a shock. Other parts of the country get (and have been getting) more than us, but for some reason we were the coldest place the other night. I do not pretend to understand the vagaries of meteorology...

I don't know what is going on in the world.

Here in California, its rained for 5 days solid for the second time this year.

Also, one of our ski resorts has the most snow in the entire world at the moment.

But keep warm!

I'm starting to think it's that climate change that I didn't used to give much thought to... Seriously, so much weird weather going on in the past few years, all over the place.

The most snow in the entire world?! Impressive.

And I'm trying! :)

That's... that's very cold. That's getting to the point where your nose hairs go brittle. That's the worst. *hugs*

I think it's -10C here tonight. We had a cold snap, then a nice warm reprieve, and now it's getting chilly again, but you poor people are getting nothing but snow and cold! I hope you're keeping warm

And, on the bright side, you had snow for Christmas y/y?

Date: 2010-12-28 10:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jjpor.livejournal.com
Brittle nose hairs?! Luckily I avoided that, but thanks for the hugs. It's been a lot warmer so far this week - we had rain yesterday and that melted most of the snow. Opinions (and weather forecasters) are divided on whether or not we're going to get more though later on...

I'm trying to keep warm... -10 is no joke either, mind you, and I've seen the snowstorms they've had on the East Coast of the US, so hope you stay warm and safe too.

And yes, I didn't have to dream of a White Xmas...there is that, at least! :D

Yeah, that's the indication that it's really bloody cold and you ought to go back inside. xD

Don't worry about me. All of the bad weather this year seems to be giving me a miss, which is good news considering the really awful weather some folks are having. Today it was nice and warm; almost spring-like.

Sort of "aahh, me nose!" sort of reaction... :D

Well, good for you - spring-like sounds nice...as long as it's still spring-like in, you know, the actual springtime. The kind of crazy weather that seems to be going on lately, I wouldn't bet on it... O.o
