So, I've been rather ill-advisedly watching this programme "Outcasts" on BBC iPlayer. It is (or was) a sort of SF drama about colonists settling on an uninhabited (or is it?!) Earth-like planet, and to be honest, it wasn't really that good. In terms of themes and general style, it was sort of a lacklustre British knock-off of the rebooted Battlestar Galactica, but not as well written or acted (despite having an okay sort of cast, really). But anyway, for some reason I felt compelled to stick with it through all eight episodes, and kind of got to know the characters and then, in the last episode, the story suddenly gets a bit faster-paced and actually a bit interesting, and it all ends on this whopping cliffhanger.

So naturally, I discover now that the Beeb have cancelled it after one series and I'll never get to know how the cliffhanger pans out. This irks me.

:(

Well it wouldn't be a proper BSG knockoff if they had resolved anything.

Now you get to form a tiny fandom around yourself and write the series that could've been!

... or not.

lol

NNOOO! Don't say things like that to me, you know what the consequences could be!

No, to be honest, I wasn't that invested in it - I just want to know what happened next and whether a cracky theory or two I'd developed while watching turned out to be true... Not to be, alas!

More a case of space shuttle falls, everyone dies, in this particular instance, but yeah, might be scarily close to the truth, really... ;D

Yes - that's sort of the thing with modern genre television, especially something with a story arc. You kind of know it stands a better than even chance of being cancelled before completion, so I'm not surprised really, just irked, as I say ;D

Well, dang; I was actually looking forward to seeing this. Why's the Beeb acting like an American network? Sad. Very sad.

And tbh, I can see why - it was a deeply, deeply flawed programme. I just want to know how the story ended, though. I pay the licence fee - can't Aunty Beeb make an S2 just for meeee? XD

Well, there's your problem right there... ;D Yeah, good point. Well, I guess I'll just have to win the lottery and finance it myself. Of course, to do that I'll have to start playing the lottery, but...

Yeah, I'm going to stop clutching at straws any time now... ;D

Sign of the times, I guess. I mean, I don't think that kind of thing's exclusively an American thing any more anyway. But still, it'd be nice to have some kind of official word of what the cliffhanger resolution was supposed to be, at the very least. Or maybe the creators could take it to the *spits* SyFy channel? XD

As much as I share your *thpbt* impulse about SyFy (I even hate typing that ridiculous piece of Marketing Rebranding) it might be worth trying on the show producers' part.

A girl can dream, right?

From: [identity profile] jjpor.livejournal.com
Aye, and it's worked before, I think. Whether the BBC would allow it is another matter. But yes, couldn't be worse than some of SyFy's (and I'm with you on the spelling thing!) other original output that I've seen...

That's just evil and I hate how it so often happens. I was wondering if this little series would make it to the USA, but if it never ends...

From: [identity profile] jjpor.livejournal.com
Well, yes... :( I don't know, though - it doesn't stop UK telly buying US series that never end, so maybe...? As I say above, it wasn't the greatest thing you'll ever see or anything, but I sort of started to get into the story and the lack of resolution will annoy me for, oh, a day or two. ;D But still, as you say, it's bad when it happens, and too often too.

I was unaware it had been cancelled. That kind of sucks. I saw the first few episodes and thought it wasn't too bad - at the very least it had potential - and it had a wonderful little cast, too. *glares at the BBC*

Date: 2011-03-22 05:41 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jjpor.livejournal.com
Yeah, BBC! *shakes fist* As I say above, I don't think it was a great programme, or essential viewing or anything, but it did improve over the course of the run, the cast settled into their roles more as it went on and the characters developed, and you know, the story was just starting to go places and reach a sort of crisis point that promised more interesting developments to come. So, yeah. Irked. That's me.

I stuck with it as well, but cliffhanger or no, I just didn't care what happened to any of the characters... It was that bad.

I don't really dispute the badness of it, although I thought it was looking up towards the end. I just want to know who was on that other spaceship. Then I'll be happy... :D
